Marc Chagall contributed to the renewal of the art of stained-glass by creating extraordinary windows for the cathedrals of Metz and Reims, the Chapel of the Cordeliers at Sarrebourg, the Hadassah synagogue in Jerusalem, the headquarters for the United Nations in New-York, and numerous other buildings whether religious or secular throughout France and the world. This exhibition regroups several collections of paintings, sculptures, graphic artworks, archives and preparatory drawings for his stained-glass compositions. It recounts the history of these commissions, his collaboration with master glass-makers and reveals the liberties Chagall took through his choice of signs and symbols, in order to express his humanist ideals of peace and freedom as he passed the light on to us.
